Elder Latimer is in Love by Sebastian Michael Sep-Oct 2009

Arcola Theatre, London, 7 September – 3 October

In September the much acclaimed Arcola Theatre staged a play by Swiss writer Sebastian Michael, Elder Latimer is in Love - an explosive adventure of hearts & minds.

Elder Latimer is here to talk about the truth. But when the young Mormon lands in London fresh from the States, his world of absolutes starts to crumble. He falls in love with Dina, a young Muslim who’s even more convinced of her faith than he is of his, and questions of love, truth and faith take on a whole new meaning. While he is beginning to see things in the new light of a new city, Dina’s determination to do what she knows is right has no limits.
Can love conquer all? Can reason?”

Sebastian Michael was born in Manchester into a Swiss family and grew up in Basel, Switzerland, where his first two plays were staged while he was still at school and university. Since moving to London at the age of 21, he has written several stage plays and a novel, written and directed two short films, and is the writer of the [power] book, a collaboration with Prof Ludger Hovestadt and Vera Bühlmann of ETH Zürich, which postulates a new, networked model and energy culture for the Digital Age, due for publication in 2010.

"The whole cast give delightful and sensitive performances in this beautifully written play. I was held and touched throughout.
... Is it only preaching to the converted? No, for this is not a play that preaches. It works because it seems so natural and honest and is so enjoyable to watch."

The Arcola Theatre is arguably one of the best “off West-End” Theatres in London. Sebastian Michael, together with Arcola, has produced an incredible piece of contemporary Theatre. Small and minimalist in scale - incredible depth and power in content and performance. The SCFB is proud to have played a supporting role behind the scenes.
